Everyone knows that insulation helps save energy and lower energy bills as well. The U.S. Department of Energy’s website says heating and cooling account for 50% to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. If you want to substantially reduce energy costs, decreasing the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling your home is a good place to start. Insulation reduces average home heating and cooling costs by about 20%. But just how energy efficient insulation is may surprise you. Our friends at NAIMA (North American Insulation Manufacturers Association) have put together some interesting facts about insulation and energy efficiency. Please check out their site.

Due to the facts above you may notice an issue in your energy bill first and foremost. Your insulation could be a root cause of money blowing out of your pocket each month. Energy efficiency has many parts, but none are as important as your insulation. Whether you live in a newer home or better yet an old “fixer upper”, don’t ignore the fluffy stuff in between your walls.

Different Kinds of Insulation Are Used in Different Places

It is important to know that the type of insulation should vary throughout your home. Attic insulation is typically blown in or batted. (Batted insulation: fiberglass glued to a kraft paper backing to make it easier to handle and install.) Wall insulation is usually batted because it comes in a width designed to fit between wall studs. To add wall insulation after construction, it is usually blown in because you don’t have access to the inside of the walls. Basements typically have batted insulation as well. You will need to examine the various rooms in your home to determine what kind of insulation is already there.

Summer time is right around the corner, so there is no better time to check out your insulation! Next time you are in your attic looking at old photos, or even in your crawlspace or basement; look around and take notice, it only takes a quick couple of minutes. I know, I know you want to go to the pool or on vacation! But listen, while you are away wouldn’t you like the peace of mind that your home or business is not costing you more money while you are away?
